Academic team prepares for district competition

The Academic Team is beginning to prepare for district on April 16 at Stockton. They have practices every week where they answer trivia questions.

“I’m excited for districts because we haven’t been to districts in years and haven’t played anyone in our district in that time,” senior Matthew Stebbins said.

“We’re preparing for districts by practicing answering questions every Thursday after school, and sometimes studying things like encyclopedias at home or on the bus before competition,” sophomore Caitlin Easter said.

The Academic Team went to the conference competition on Feb. 20. They placed third behind Blair Oaks and Hallsville. Senior Claudia Schmitz placed second for overall points scored. Schmitz averaged over 125 points per match.

At a match, the team members are asked questions and use buzzers to answer them. Every question they answer is worth points.

“Academic Team is another way for students to get involved at school, and a lot of the questions are about math, science, history and literature, so students can directly apply the things they are learning in class,” academic team coach Brian Hrabe said.
