Behind every successful athletic program is someone working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep athletes healthy, confident, and ready to compete. At Warsaw High School, that person is athletic trainer Lisha Douglas, whose dedication to student-athletes goes far beyond the sidelines. Through decades of experience and a genuine passion for helping others, Douglas has shaped not only the athletic program at Warsaw, but also the lives of countless students.
Douglas’ path into athletic training began early, sparked by inspiration during her own high school years. What started as admiration for an older athlete eventually became the foundation for her future career.
“As a freshman in high school, one of the senior volleyball players I looked up to wanted to go into sports medicine, so I decided I was going to do the same,” Douglas said.
Her journey required dedication and sacrifice. She completed six years of schooling and has now been certified for 28 years. She began her professional career at an NAIA college, where she worked for eight years. While she enjoyed the college setting, the position came with challenges that many athletic trainers face.
“I really enjoyed the college setting but the pay was really low,” Douglas said.
Eventually, she transitioned to Warsaw High School, where she has now served student-athletes for 20 years. Over time, she has built meaningful relationships with players, parents, coaches, and administrators. Helping injured athletes return to competition remains one of the most rewarding parts of her career.
“Helping my athletes go from being hurt to back to playing is very rewarding,” Douglas said.
Like many in her profession, Douglas has faced difficulties along the way. Long hours and limited compensation are realities of the job, yet they have not lessened her commitment to her athletes.
Reflecting on her journey, she describes a career shaped by connection and fulfillment. The relationships she has built and the success stories she has witnessed continue to make the work worthwhile.
“I have made many friends throughout my career from players, parents, and coaches that make my job so very rewarding,” Douglas said.
Her impact on Warsaw’s athletic program is best seen through the experiences of the athletes she has helped. Senior athlete Sadie Chapman experienced a serious ankle injury during her sophomore year that led to nerve damage and multiple surgeries, turning her recovery into a long and difficult process.
“My injury hasn’t been anything short or sweet,” Chapman said.
Throughout Chapman’s recovery, Douglas remained a constant source of support. She advocated for Chapman, encouraged her through setbacks, and stayed committed during years of rehabilitation.
“Lisha has truly been there through every single step, and been a very loud advocate for me through the last two and a half years,” Chapman said.
In addition to physical rehabilitation, Douglas provided motivation when recovery felt overwhelming. Her encouragement helped push Chapman forward on days when quitting felt easier than continuing.
“She has physically pushed me even on days I didn’t want to do anything but give up on myself,” Chapman said.
Another student-athlete, Ryan Fajen, shared his experience after spraining his MCL during football season. Lisha helped him understand his injury and guided him through a structured recovery plan.
“She helped me by telling me what my injury was,” Fajen said.
Fajen credits Douglas for preparing him physically to return to competition. Through daily work focused on strength and balance, she ensured he recovered safely and effectively.
“She did the things necessary to get me back on the field as soon as possible,” Fajen said. “She had me doing strength, balance, and we also did stim every day.”
Beyond individual recoveries, Douglas plays a critical role in the overall success of Warsaw athletics. By keeping athletes healthy and prepared, she helps teams perform at their highest level.
“She benefits our programs by keeping our athletes healthy and in shape so that way we can perform to the best of our abilities,” Fajen said.
Administrators also recognize Lisha’s importance to the school and district. Her commitment to student well-being and the consistency she provides, set Warsaw apart from many other schools.
“She is a tremendous asset to our athletic programs and school district,” Athletic Director Ryan Boyer said. “She always puts our kids’ well being first.”
In a time when many schools struggle to provide athletic training support, Warsaw is fortunate to have a full-time athletic trainer dedicated to its students.
“Schools around the state, and nation, struggle to have part-time athletic trainers. We are very fortunate to have a full-time one,” Boyer said.
Ultimately, Douglas’ impact at Warsaw High School reaches far beyond taped ankles and rehabilitation plans. She is a constant presence during athletes’ lowest moments, a voice of reassurance during uncertainty, and a source of strength when setbacks feel overwhelming. Through her dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to student-athletes, Douglas has helped shape a culture of care within Warsaw athletics. The victories, comebacks, and confidence seen across the program would not be the same without her steady support on the sidelines. Her presence ensures that athletes are never alone on their road to recovery.
