The golf team started their 2026 season with the biggest team coach Dennis Larson has seen in seven years.
The golf season started up for spring in early March with 12 members in total, although the team is only allowed five JV and five Varsity players to compete each meet. They still want more people on the team as the years go on. Larson thinks that this season will go great.
“We’ve got a few returning players and a lot of newcomers. Everyone seems willing to learn and put in the work, which makes a big difference. If we keep that mindset, it makes for a fun season,” Larson said.
He sees this year’s golf season as an opportunity to not only win, but to improve.
”I see this season as a great opportunity for growth and success. We’ve got a good group of kids who are motivated to improve. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone develop their skills and confidence and, more importantly, have fun as the season goes on,” Larson.
There’s many reasons students should join the golf team. Sophomore Cayden Hockett wanted to try something new.
“I decided to join the golf team because I wanted to try out different sports the school offered,” Hockett said.
Most students golf as a hobby outside of school, especially as it starts to warm up in the spring. Joining the golf team would be a great option to consider for those students.
Sophomore Lincoln Vaughn’s favorite thing about golf was that he really enjoys,”being able to play on the course for free in season.”
The team participates in many competitions. Some are away and some are held at home at the Shawnee Bend Golf Course here in Warsaw. Hockett likes the competitions, because he enjoys the competing and social aspect.
“The competition is fun because it’s kinda like you’re competing against yourself but you’re not and you get to meet new people and see how others golf,” Hockett said.
Golf isn’t just a skill athletes use one time at a competition. It’s a life-long skill they can use throughout life and outside of school with their friends. The team is always welcome to have more people joining, especially the coaches.
“The golf team is a great opportunity for students of all skill levels to get involved in a sport that’s both competitive and enjoyable. Players can improve quickly, spend time outdoors, and represent the school in matches. Golf also offers a more relaxed team environment while still building valuable skills that last beyond high school. Whether you’re experienced or just curious, joining the team is a chance to try something new and can start a sport that you can play the rest of your life,” Larson said.
