High School Hero: Kolby Estes
Freshman takes on the responsibility of high school
Freshman Kolby Estes has done more than necessary to get through his first year of high school. Estes is positive, attentive, and always prepared for his classes.
“Kolby has an excellent work ethic and will do whatever it takes to succeed,” Algebra instructor Jowell Roellig said.
“He does the best he can do at anything he does,” senior Shyla Estes, Kolby’s sister, said.
Kolby Estes has missed several days of school due to extra curricular activities and injuries. He takes the responsibility to get his missing work without having to be told. When he doesn’t understand anything he makes the arrangements to come in and get help.
“When I am not at school, I try to get my homework from someone and get it done,” Estes said.
“I do not have to tell him what he is missing or what he needs to do,” Roellig said. “He is self motivated.”
Estes does not need to be told to do anything. He just does it.
“If something needs to be done during class to help me out, he does it without even asking,” Roellig said. “This is very rare for a freshman.”
“Even though he is my younger brother, I look up to him in many ways,” Shyla Estes said.
Shyla said Kolby is the kind of brother she can depend on.
“He’s always there for me,” Shyla Estes said.
Kolby Estes is also involved in wrestling, FFA, pep club, and finance club.
Some heros of Kolby Estes’s are his parents. He said his parents do anything for him as long as it benefits and helps him with something. Roellig is a big hero in Kolby Estes’s life as well.
“She cares about her students more than any other teacher I know,” Kolby Estes said. “She is always pushing us to be the best we can be, not just in math but as an all around person.”
Kolby Estes is considering going to Mizzou to wrestle and become a large and small animal veterinarian.
Kolby Estes believes he was nominated as high school hero because he behaves and does the right things. In order to be a hero he tries to do the right things even though he is not being watched.
Estes said being given the honor of being a high school hero will remind him to keep doing the right things.
A hero, to Kolby Estes, is someone who cares about other people and will go out of their way to help someone.
