The Cats golf season has been filled with ups and downs. Golf can be a very challenging sport, but Warsaw’s players were up for the challenge this season. Junior Parker Gemes and sophomore Cash Davis started off the season finishing in first place in the Frostbite Scramble in Higginsville.
Last year, the Cats had one golfer place at conference, and this year they matched that with one golfer earning conference honors: sophomore Cash Davis.
“The team held their own in a very competitive field. While we didn’t take the top spot, several players posted personal bests. Cash Davis took All-Conference honors this year with a ninth place finish.
“Golf is incredibly challenging because it’s as much a mental game as it is a physical one. Every shot requires focus, patience, and precision. Even a slight misstep can change the outcome of a round, and staying composed through 18 holes takes real discipline,” said Head Golf Coach Dennis Larson.
“What makes golf so hard is that there are so many tiny details into having a good swing or reading a green,” said senior Carter Howell
Many golfers would say that it takes more than just practice after school to get better and that a player needs to find time outside of practice to improve on their game.
“We have gotten better from the beginning of the season because we’ve been practicing even on weekends and any other days we have off,” said sophomore Cash Davis.
Throughout the season the coaches see the golfers highs and even their lows. Golf can be a very mental game but a great support team goes a long way.
“My favorite part is watching the players grow—not just as athletes, but as individuals. Golf teaches so many life skills like patience, resilience, and integrity. Being able to mentor players through those lessons and celebrate their progress is incredibly rewarding,” said Larson.
The golf team has one senior this year and other golfers on the team had some very nice things to say about their lone senior, Carter Howell.
“Carter is a very great leader and is very well rounded on the golf course. He knows how to lighten the mood and pick the team up when they are down,” said Davis.
The golf team overall has improved as a team and throughout their practices and even practicing on the weekends.
“ I have improved in distance, I have added like 30 yards to each of my clubs,” said junior Parker Gemes.
“ I feel I have gotten much better from the beginning of the season as I have gotten a lot of advice and tips from my coaches and my family,” said Davis.
