The golf team opened up their start to a successful season in Higginsville in the Frostbite Scramble. Junior Parker Gemes and sophomore Cash Davis finished in first place, scoring 37 (+2.) The team overall got second place in this scramble.
The team then traveled to Versailles for the Versailles invitational meet. Overall, they ended with a 13th place finish, out of 17 teams. Gemes tied for 20th out of 94 golfers in this meet.
Their first home meet this year the Cats faced Butler and El Dorado, with a win over Butler but falling short to El Dorado. Davis ended up taking 4th place this meet.
The most recent meet for the golfers was at home taking the win over Lincoln. Gemes took home first place, Gabe Noland finshing in second place, and Davis in third.
“To prepare for a meet, I stay up the night before looking at the course online so I don’t go in unprepared,” junior Parker Gemes said.
The team has one senior this year, Carter Howell, who plays a big role on the team.
“With being the only senior on my team, I try to bring leadership and positive energy to the team,” senior Carter Howell said.
Howell began golf the summer of his 8th grade year. He decided to join golf after he got the news that he would no longer be allowed to play baseball. “The goal for the season is to improve mentally and physically, getting better about keeping a positive attitude. Another goal is to hopefully place at conference and to be competitive at every meet we go to this season,” Howell said.
Dennis Larson is the golf head coach. Larson started coaching golf in 2020, with much experience from golf always being a part of his life.
“My goal for this season is to have everyone improve on their scores each match we have,” Larson said.
The golf team has three returning members and seven new members.
Senior Carter Howell, and juniors Leah Miller and Parker Gemes are returning this year, while juniors Sean Reinerstein, Evan Lomax, sophomores Cash Davis, Lou Schnakenberg, Gabe Noland Landon Meers, and freshman Lincoln Vaughn are joining the team for their first year.
“I wanted to try out a new hobby so I decided to join golf,” Schnakenberg said.
Cash Davis being a new member has helped the golf team lead to success.
“I decided to join golf because I enjoy doing it and plan to for probably a lot of my life,” Davis said.
