Getting a snow day call is an exciting moment for a student, but when it comes time to make up those days, students and teachers have to prepare for a big change to their weekly schedules.
The Warsaw school district has had a total of 11 winter weather cancellations this school year. Students participated in five AMI days (Alternative Methods of Instruction) due to winter weather cancelling school. Students were able to continue learning at home through online or paper assignments on days school is cancelled in order to not add-on to the school year.
Due to an increase in poor weather conditions, the Warsaw R-IX School District depleted the number of AMI days given. Snow makeup days are provided in the school’s calendar after the usage of AMI days is unavailable. The district presents school to be in session on Mondays for any day missed due to weather or other issues.
Recent closures have required six school days to be made up. Students attended school on Feb. 24, March 3 and March 24, but still must attend on March 31, April 14 and April 28 to make up for the missed classroom time. This has led to interference with some Warsaw student’s schedules.
“I think that snow makeup days should not be on Mondays, but instead we should add on to the end of the year. They disrupt my time needed with helping my animals,” said freshman Kaylee Jackson.
Students imply different opinions on how the makeup days affect their daily lives. Some would rather attend on Mondays than add on the end of the school year.
“I would much rather makeup school on Mondays than at the end of the year because the school year is already ending later than usual,” said sophomore Maya Daughenbaugh.
The last day of the school year is set for May 22.
The district has held a few makeup days already this year, with more upcoming ones scheduled. Students tend to make plans on Mondays because it is their day off from school, but with these makeup days they have to cancel.
“I do not enjoy going to school on Mondays because it prevents me from going to work,” said junior Brennen Slavens. He usually works at The Fix on weekends.
“When we have school on Mondays it makes my weekend shorter so I get less time to sleep,” said sophomore Logan Gemes. In his free time, he likes to stay up all night playing video games.
Making up school on Mondays involves varying opinions from the students. Some say they like attending school on Mondays, and others think they should add-on to the end of the year.
