What scares you? Phobias are very common all around the world. They can range from scary ghosts to holes and spiders. Some can even go to having a fear of phobias.
Brooklyn Hetherington hates holes. She has trypophobia.
“I don’t know. I just get the heebie jeebies anytime I see honeycombs or just large holes in general. I actually developed this fear of one botfly removal video,” she said.
Senior Hazel Thompson has scotophobia, or a fear of the dark. She is truly afraid of what is in the dark.
”I’m not really afraid of the dark itself, but what’s in the dark that I can’t see.”
Sophomore Shilah Hart is not a fan of needles. This phobia is called trypanophobia which is very common. Hart has had this phobia since she was little.
”I guess I’ve just always been scared of them,” she said.
Freshman Johrdan Decker has arachnophobia, or a fear of spiders. Decker explains how spiders creep him out.
”They have eight legs and they are just plain scary,” he said.
According to John Hopkins Medical, phobias are caused from early childhood trauma or even genetic factors.
“Phobias are an uncontrollable, irrational, and lasting fear of a certain object, situation, or activity,” the website reports.
The Mayo Clinic reports that “Phobias are common anxiety disorders.¨
Phobias are considered an anxiety disorder, and are found more common in females. Phobias tend to take a toll on everyday life, such as walking the dog at night and coming across a spider, or walking into a dark room.
Freshman Abigail Burnham also has arachnophobia.
“They are hairy, and they have really scary eyes,” she said.
Junior Makayla Lawrence has a phobia of heights. This is called Acrophobia.
“I been afraid of heights since I was little,” she explains.
Coach Justin Wisdom has a minor phobia of heights and snakes. Wisdom explains how he can get used to those things.
“I am a deer hunter, so when I’m hunting, I have to be on my deer stand. It takes me a while to get used to being up there, but then I am good. Now, it depends on the situation for snakes. If I can see a snake before I walk right up on them, then I will be okay.”
Freshman Blaine Smith has a phobia of heights as well. He explains how it depends on the height to make him scared.
“I am scared to fall, but also it kind of just depends on the height of something.”
