The WHS vocal and instrumental musicians were pleased with their results of large ensemble state competitions in April. Band earned an “outstanding” rating, while two large ensemble choirs both received “exemplary” state ratings.

   The band went to state for large concert groups on April 5 at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar. They played two pieces, “After the Storm” by Jonathon McBride and “Rough Riders” by Karl L. King. They also performed a sight reading contest where they were given two pieces that they have never even seen before and had to play it for three judges. 

   “I thought it went pretty well. I think we have improved from last year,” sophomore Christian Culberson said.

   They received an outstanding rating.

   “I was pleased with the results and proud of the band for all their efforts,” director Sandra Stewart said.  

   Both the Madrigal chamber choir and the women’s choir received the top rating of “exemplary” at the state vocal competition at SBU on April 12.

   Madrigal performed “Il Lampo ” arranged by Ryan Main, and “Pretty Little Horses.” Women’s choir performed “I’ve Decided to Be an Old Maid,” by Ruth Rowen and Bill Simon, and “Tonight,” by Sarah Teasdale and Enrique Lacarcel.

    ”I’m very proud of the students who participated and I hope they feel a great sense of accomplishment.  I appreciate their willingness to go above and beyond with me as we prepared these pieces,” director Deanna Schockmann said.

   Madrigal Choir and Women’s Choir which includes women from Madrigal, Women’s Choir, Performance Choir and 8th grade all went and performed two pieces together.     

   “We worked really hard. We got a 1, which is the best you can get,” freshman Jordan Dove said.

   The community can listen to vocal and instrumental performances at Evening of Song on May 9.
