The WHS Golf team started their season February 27 and have had 7 meets since their first practice. The team is coached by Dennis Larson and Suttel Griffin.
The Cats have a record of 4-2. “Not counting tournaments and matches where teams don’t take a team score,” Golf coach Dennis Larson said.
On April 4 the golf team had a meet against Versailles. The cats came away victorious, with the score of 194-224, in their first home meet of the season.
“It felt good to win at home against a conference team, last season they beat us on our stomping grounds, so it felt good to get back at them,” Junior Carter Howell said.
The members of the golf team share what they enjoy most about golf.
“I enjoy just playing the sport, since I am not able to play anything else, so it is nice to be able to play a sport competitively in high school,” Howell said.
“Hitting the ball 300 plus yards and everyone going ‘wow’!” Sophomore Urijah Phillips.
The golf team has had three more home meets since April 4, which puts them at 5 home meets this season.
While the Cats didn’t come out with first place at the Tipton Tri, they had one of the lowest team scores there.
“We’ve had numerous matches that we’ve done well at. I would have to say the Tipton Tri is one of our best. Even though we didn’t come out with first place, we shot the lowest we’ve had in a while,” Larson said.
Their last home meet was April 8, against Lincoln and Smithton, which ended with a Warsaw victory.
“We had been up and down lately with our scores but our kids came out and shot what they needed to come away with the win against Lincoln by 1 stroke. Carson Bonner tied with 2 other kids from Lincoln so we went to the hardest hole and went off hole 1 (our hardest hole) to see who had the best score on that hole. Bonner shot 3 better on that hole to defeat the other 2 and take 1st individually. Carter Howell had one of his better rounds of the season and finished 5th,” Larson said.
With the April 10 home meet against El Dorado Springs and Butler being postponed, it has been rescheduled for April 29.
“The golf match on the 10th getting canceled kind of bummed me out because I was looking forward to it,” Sophomore Parker Gemes said.
There are 7 returning golfers this year, including: Carter Howell, Carson Bonner, Johnny Jones, Parker Gemes, Elliot Kowal, Hannah Wooldridge, Charlotte Aslpaugh.
“These players have improved by focusing on what they need to work on from last season and trying to fix it this season. It has shown that they have worked on it by their scores so far,” Larson said.
