With the WHS boys basketball team not having any seniors the underclassmen really have to step up for the team.
“We don’t have any seniors so that makes us all underclassmen. I feel that we are improving with our leadership off the floor and playing on the floor,” head boys basketball coach Matthew Brownsberger said.
The basketball team has been making big improvements this year.
“I think we have made a big improvement from last year and are getting better as a team as a whole,” junior guard Logan Gemes said.
Last year the boys were 1-24, this year they are 3-16.
“We could be better, but overall it’s an improvement compared to previous years,” junior guard Shane Poyser said.
It can be difficult to stay encouraged through a struggling season.
“Whether it is a successful or struggling season you have to stay focused on the day to day process. You can’t get too high with the highs and too low with the lows,” Brownsberger said.
“Don’t just look at our record. I feel like we definitely should have won some of the close games we’ve had and will be a good team when the ball finds the hoop,” junior guard Garrett Ferguson said.
Having goals is very important to have things to reach for.
“As an individual, I have to be more consistent and to be able to handle adversity better when I’m not doing well in a game. I also need to look to handle the ball more and create space to get other people open,” Gemes said.
“We have been more competitive, won more games and won two close games. Turning a program around can be a long process. We are building better habits everyday,” Brownsberger said.
Coming together and playing as a team helps each individual player in the end.
“To be honest I didn’t set any personal goals, I just wanna keep growing as a team and win the games we should,” Ferguson said.
Each player gives their own contributions to the team.
“I feel like I have brought a scoring aspect and have been a good leader to lead the team,” Gemes said.
“I try to contribute as much as possible to the team. I feel like my biggest contributions are my defense, my effort, and my rebounding,” Poyser said.
“I haven’t been able to score a lot, however I feel like I see the floor well and hit people when they are open,” Ferguson said.
