Girls wrestling takes step forward with district performance, state qualifier
Junior Skylon Boone is the first girl from Warsaw to be a state qualifier since MSHSAA sanctioned girls wrestling. Boone represented Warsaw at the state tournament two weeks ago.
Boone has worked hard and has seen her work pay off.
“I’ve been training and I feel proud of myself because others have been doing it since they were younger,” Boone said.
Boone has worked to improve all season.
“Skylon has been in the mat room working on her technique and drive since July of last summer,” coach Aspen Longworth said.
Boone has been a role model for fellow wrestlers.
“I think girls can learn from Skylon by setting their own goals to qualify for state in the years to come,” Longworth said.
Many of the wrestlers’ seasons ended on Feb. 10 at their district tournament. Most of the wrestlers say they will miss wrestling season.
“I just miss wrestling tournaments,” freshman Naomi Yoder said.
Some of them didn’t want their season to end like it did.
“I wanted my season to go on a little farther and I didn’t do too well in the last tournament, along with districts, so it was very disappointing,” sophomore Aylsia Yoder said.
The wrestlers have learned and improved.
“I’ve learned that wrestling is a very disciplined sport. You have to learn to cut down on food and find time to add more workouts in. That was really the only way you could be successful,” Yoder said.
The coaches hope to see growth in girls wrestling.
“I do think that girls wrestling will continue to grow as we get our middle school girls that are coming up. I also hope that with seeing more girls join, the interest will grow and start to spread through the school,” Longworth said.
