The WHS Math Team has competed in a handful of competitions during the 2024-2025 school year. The team has been to Warrensberg and Smith-Cotton, with a cancellation at Cole Camp due to poor weather. Even though the math team has only taken on two competitions so far, those have resulted in a successful outcome.
“They placed 1st at the Smith Cotton competition. They placed 4th in the Warrensburg competition, but they missed 3rd place by 2 points,” said math teacher, and math club sponsor, Amy Spunaugle.
Different events are participated in based on one’s skills and sometimes grade level. Although, teams can divide with multiple students from various grades. Each team, as well as, comprises different levels of knowledge.
“I am in the mixed team and also usually do algebra, geometry, and word problems,” sophomore Elizabeth Winters said.
Math club has participants from schools all around the state of Missouri for each competition.
“My favorite part of math club is getting to meet new people and hanging out with all of my friends,” said junior Brennen Slavens.
Math team members step out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves to compete with their math skill and knowledge.
“Do not be intimidated by the math club. It is a lot of fun. There are team tests that you can take that will help with a qualifying score to receive your math club letter. No one ever knows your test score. We only know if you placed in the top 10. It is great to put on college scholarship applications. It is a fun way to spend time with your friends. It is also a way to make connections with students from all over the state of Missouri. BUT most of all, it is a great way to help with test anxiety,” said Spunaugle.
Many participants carry a successful outcome and a positive image on the community, school, advisor, and themselves. The math team has competitions in the future and have more chances at a positive finish.
