At the start of a new year, people tend to set goals, or resolutions, for themselves. New Year’s resolutions are a promise some make to themselves to do something good or quit doing something bad on the first day of the year.
“I think that people don’t normally stick to their new year’s resolutions, so they should try to make it something important that they really want for themselves,” sophomore Adele Anderson said.
Resolutions can be towards a variety of goals, such as school, sports, or personal goals.
“My new year’s resolution is to stay consistent in school because I would love to achieve top fifteen in my class this year,” sophomore Sara Miller said. She has set this goal for herself to commit to and plans to achieve it by turning in work on time and always paying attention in class. Miller says she tries to make a resolution every year to feel successful.
People also set goals for themselves that relate to sports or extracurricular activities.
“I am an athlete, so I need to stay healthy for my sport,” junior Brayden Henderson said. His new year’s resolution is to stay hydrated to keep his body in good shape for track season.
“My new year’s resolution is to do calisthenics because they would be good to strengthen my shoulders for wrestling,” junior Naomi Yoder said.
Senior baseball players are looking to make their new year’s resolutions come true during their last high school season.
“My new year’s resolution is to win baseball districts in 2025 because, why not,” senior Bradley Watson said. Along with Watson, senior Reece Maxwell said he is setting a goal to be a good leader for the team this year.
“Fifty-four percent of people hope to get better sleep habits to improve health,” stated sleepfoundation.org.
“I need more rest to help my mental health/focus, especially during football season,” Coach/Athletic Director Ryan Boyer said. Boyer says he needs to set a routine and stick to it to improve his sleeping habits.
Other goals are financial in nature.
“A goal of mine is to pay off my car so I do not have any debt,” history teacher Brooklyn Hetherington said.
New Year’s resolutions can vary in subject areas. Many people have set goals they wish to achieve throughout the year and then make a new one the following year. Overall, resolutions are viewed as an opportunity to improve people’s ability to accomplish their goals for the new year.
