Boys basketball season has started and players and coaches are focusing on improving over last year’s record.
Last year, the team went 5-19, winning one home game and three away games. This year, the team hopes to improve. Their season started with a home game against Sweet Springs on Nov. 26 and a 63-33 win.
The team continued with the first tournament of the season, the 92nd annual Warsaw tournament. The boys team won the consolation game and got fifth place. They went 2-1 losing to Lincoln (48-59) and winning against both Windsor (55-40) and Leeton (50-44).
While football players were late to the start of the season, they are just as ready as the rest of the team.
“You know we’re athletes and we have been doing this for a while now so I think we will be alright,” senior guard Shane Poyser said.
This year the senior and junior players are returning to lead and set a good example for the younger players.
“We are going to count on our seniors that have been in the program. We also have several juniors that have played several minutes. Collectively, our upperclassmen could all be good leaders,” coach Matthew Brownsberger said.
All the players have established both team goals and personal goals for this season.
“My personal goal for this season is to have more than six assists in a game,” junior Guard Brennen Slavens said.
“For this season my team goals are to have a winning season and continue to build a better name for Wildcat Basketball,” senior Guard/Forward Logan Gemes said.
The Wildcats have an upcoming trip to Indiana to play a game at the Hoosiers gym in Indiana.
“I can’t wait to go to Indiana because I think it will be fun to spend time with my teammates and get us all closer together,” said junior guard Brayden Henderson.
Having a pre game game routine is essential for a good game day. Several players have some that are important to them.
“Before every game I always try to pray to get my mind right,” junior Guard Luke Henderson said.
The team wants to improve their record and skill and expects a great season ahead of them.
“I feel like this year we will improve and I know we will get better every day,”
Brownsberger said.
