The twelve football seniors have led the team to success so far this season. Going into the Versailles game on Sept. 27, the team was 4-0 and ranked fifth in class 2A.
“We have a lot of four-year seniors and as a whole this team has experienced a lot of success throughout their lives,” coach Ryan Boyer said.
The players attribute their experience to their success.
“Experience goes a long way, especially in close games or when adversity hits,” Boyer said.
The team gained big wins against Lawson (33-0), Adrian (28-21), Lafayette County (21-16) and Sherwood (49-7). Seniors had lost to Lafayette County for the past three seasons.
The experience with having many seniors and juniors have helped with success of winning the games.
“Having a huge senior class and juniors has helped us, we all have had plenty of playing time last year so that helped,” senior quarterback Garrett Ferguson said.
The team has been training to improve themselves.
“We train throughout the offseason and summer. The weight room, camps, and 7-on-7 are our main forms of training,” Boyer said.
Players say being part of the team has taught valuable lessons while playing.
“Everything won’t come easy to you, you all have to work together and trust each other through the entire way,” junior running back Josh Harvath said.
Some players have found challenges
“Some challenges we have as a team are staying focused and staying hungry,” freshman outside linebacker Brecken Brewster said.
The players have had season highlights so far.
“It has probably been beating Higginsville, Adrian, and getting state ranked as a team,” Harvath said.
Ferguson said the team needs to fix mistakes to continue their success.
“The main struggles we usually have are penalties, and or making the silly plays while blocking. When we fix those things up we are gonna be even better, and we are doing good,” he said.
